Day 12

Last night I got sick after eating dinner at Primi. We think it was the food I worded, because it was salmon and wheat pasta.Anyway my tummy was not happy. The worst part was it is Kieron’s birthday and he had to drive 800 km to the border. The night before we decided to ordered breakfast in the room and this morning I couldn’t eat anything. The breakfast was amazing! So much food for two people. Kieron ate most of the food and took two croissants with us on the road. I managed to break one apart and eat that. We left the Hilton to drive to the Orange River and to where we were staying. It started to bucket down again and 40 km from border, half the main road was flooded.

We stayed at Felix United Camp. The road to the camp is tared, but half it was washed away. Half the camp was washed away as well. The road to our rooms, where washed away, so they put us in other rooms further up the bank.

Day 10

Windhoek: So I was on driving duty to the capital of Namibia. Though I didn’t drive the whole stretch. While driving the heavens decided to open with a bucketful of rain. Windhoek is just a big city, which is in the middle of a revamp. Staying in a city can give you good places and not so hot places.

I think what made my thought of staying in the city, so much better was the fact that we stayed in the Hilton (yes the Hilton, the most expensive hotel there is) for two nights. I never thought I would ever set foot in a hotel like that in my life. It was such an experience! Anyway for supper we decided to check out the hotel restaurants. We had sushi for supper, was expensive but was an amazing experience!:) R 52 for a glass of white wine!

Day 8

Today was pretty much a chilled day. We got up, went to breakfast next door. Then afterwards we went to the museum in the morning and around midday we went to find lunch. We discussed that we both wanted to do quad biking the next morning but we had to go and book. So after lunch we went to the aquarium and then later on in the afternoon we went to book for quad biking. The quad biking is on the edge of town in the sand dunes. Swakopmund is surrounded by sand dunes and the sea.

Ron suggested we drive back to the apartments for a rest before we head off to find dinner. The Tug restaurant was decided on in the end and it was the best decision we made. The food was amazing! The best seafood we had and we live in Cape Town! The Tug is set on a jetty at the harbour in an old boat, they have done up. It is beautiful, sitting on the jetty watching the sun setting.

Day 7

Today Ron and I had a long drive to our next town, Swakopmund on a dust road, through passes. All dust roads had a very good gradient and we where very impressed with the passes. On the way out of Soussvlei there is a small town called Solitaire. This has a petrol station, lodge, bakery and general store, but they serve the most awesome apple pie. I remember this town been only been a petrol station and a general store back in the day. They still made awesome apple pie to this day.

We drove to Walvis Bay and then down the cost to Swakopmund. On the way we got stopped at a road blog. I must admit the police are really chilled about road blogs, though because we where from South Africa, they stopped us. They where very friendly.

Been back in Swakopmund was amazing! It is a very German town but it has a very nice feel to it. We stayed in Swakopmund Luxury Apartments for three night. All I can say is WOW!! I was so impressed. I have to brag that I have the best husband, ever! IT guys make awesome husbands!:)

Day 6

This morning we got up as the sun was rising. We went to pick up our picnic breakfast at the lodge before we headed into the park. There was a small queue, while waiting for the park to open, while the sun was slowly rising.

The first stop was Deadvlei. On the way to the vlei there is a a dune called Dune 45, which is awesome to climb (I did it in 2004), but unfortunately we didn’t have time and there were so many people on the dune. Deadvlei was amazing! The white vlei with dead trees scattered in it with the red sand dunes around and the blue sky above. We where aloud to drive to a certain point and then we had to get a shuttle into the vlei, because we didn’t have a 4×4. While we were waiting we had some of our breakfast.

Midday we went to Sesriem Canyon, it was beautiful but was so hot. Drinking warm water is not nice. After the canyon we went to the petrol station to buy food and water. I have never knew ice cold water could taste so good:) Then late afternoon we went to have drinks by the pool. It was beautiful. That evening we had a braai at our tent and did some more drinking.

Day 5

This morning we left early, because it was very windy and there was sandy blowing across the road. It got quite scary, but I trusted Kieron’s driving. Then we set off the long dirty road to  Sossusvlei. We arrived at our location called Desert Camp for 2 nights. It was self catering and we didn’t really plan for it, but at least there was a petrol station, which had everything in it. Including alcohol!:) We drove 400 km that day and my little car made it! The scenery was amazing and we barely saw anyone along the way, except gemsbok. It was lovely. We decided to book a picnic breakfast  for the next day for Sossusvlei, because we had to get up really early to go through the park. Then we went swimming late this afternoon, because it was so hot! Then went back to the tent for a light dinner and drinks and bed.
